What Is Answer Engine Optimization (AEO)?
For the last two decades, being found online meant one thing: ranking on Google. That’s changing. A growing share of people now ask ChatGPT, Claude, or Perplexity a question instead of typing it into a search box - and those tools don’t return a list of links. They return a direct answer, often with a citation.
That shift is why Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) exists as its own discipline.
What AEO actually is
Answer Engine Optimization is the practice of structuring a website’s content so AI answer engines can accurately find, understand, and cite it when someone asks a relevant question. It runs alongside traditional SEO, not instead of it - you still need a technically sound, crawlable site. AEO adds a layer on top that makes your content specifically legible to language models, not just search crawlers.
Concretely, that means:
- Direct-answer content. A clear, one-to-two sentence answer to a specific question, placed near the top of a page - not buried three paragraphs into a narrative introduction.
- Structured data.
FAQPage,HowTo,Organization, andPersonschema (JSON-LD) that explicitly tells machines what a page is, who wrote it, and what questions it answers. - Clean entity information. Consistent facts about who you are, what you do, and where you’re based - repeated accurately across your site, LinkedIn, and business directories - so AI models don’t have to guess or reconcile conflicting signals.
- Machine-readable crawler access. A
robots.txtthat explicitly allows AI crawlers (GPTBot, ClaudeBot, Google-Extended, PerplexityBot) rather than blocking them by default, plus anllms.txtfile that gives AI systems a quick, structured summary of your site.
How AEO is different from SEO
Traditional SEO optimizes for a ranking position in a list of results. The unit of success is a blue link and a click.
AEO optimizes for something narrower and, in some ways, higher-stakes: being the answer, or a cited source, inside a generated response. There’s no list - either a model surfaces your brand accurately, or it doesn’t mention you at all. That makes structured data and unambiguous, factual writing more important than backlink volume, which is why a page can rank fine on Google and still never get cited by an AI answer engine if it’s written as a wall of marketing copy instead of a direct answer.
Why it matters now
AI answer engines are increasingly where research and vendor-shortlisting happen before someone ever visits a website directly. If your content isn’t structured for machines to parse and cite, you’re invisible in that layer of discovery - even if your SEO is otherwise solid.
The good news: none of this requires abandoning SEO fundamentals. A technically sound, well-structured site with clear, honest content serves both search engines and answer engines at the same time. AEO is less a separate strategy and more a stricter, more disciplined version of good content practice - and it’s a lot easier to implement before you have years of loosely-structured content to retrofit.
