How to Choose a Performance Marketing Agency
Hiring a performance marketing agency is a high-stakes decision made under time pressure, usually right when growth has stalled and the pressure to fix it is highest. That combination - urgency plus unfamiliarity - is exactly when founders make the worst hiring decisions. Here’s a practical checklist to slow down and evaluate properly.
1. Ask who actually does the work
Many agencies sell you a senior strategist in the pitch meeting, then hand execution to a junior account team you never speak to again. Ask directly: who will be doing the day-to-day work on my account, and how often will I talk to them? Get names, not just titles.
2. Check for channel bias
An agency that only runs Google Ads will tell you Google Ads is the answer to your growth problem. An agency that only does SEO will tell you SEO is. This isn’t necessarily dishonest - it’s structural: agencies recommend what they sell. Look for a partner who can credibly speak to multiple channels (paid search, paid social, SEO, CRO, brand) and explain trade-offs between them, rather than one that pushes a single channel regardless of your situation.
3. Ask what they measure
“We’ll grow your traffic” and “we’ll grow your followers” are not the same as “we’ll grow your pipeline and revenue.” Ask specifically what metrics show up in your monthly report, and whether those metrics tie back to actual business outcomes (leads, sales, ROAS, CAC) rather than vanity metrics (impressions, reach, likes).
4. Understand the contract terms
- Is there a long lock-in period, or can you exit with reasonable notice?
- Are ad spend and agency fees separate and transparent, or bundled in a way that’s hard to audit?
- What happens to your tracking setup, ad accounts, and creative assets if you leave? (You should own your ad accounts and data - always.)
5. Ask about reporting cadence and access
Do you get real-time dashboard access, or only a monthly PDF? Real-time access (via Looker Studio, native ad platform dashboards, or similar) is table stakes at this point - if an agency can’t offer it, that’s a signal about how much they want you watching the account closely.
6. Get a diagnosis before a pitch
Be wary of any agency that proposes a full strategy and budget before actually auditing your current account, funnel, or market position. A credible partner starts with a diagnostic - even a paid one - before recommending a course of action, because the right strategy depends entirely on where your specific constraint actually is.
The bottom line
The best performance marketing partner isn’t necessarily the one with the flashiest case studies - it’s the one that’s honest about what they don’t do, transparent about what they measure, and willing to diagnose before they prescribe. Ask the six questions above in your first call, and you’ll filter out most of the bad fits before you ever sign a contract.
